Overview

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

• This position conducts inspections under state and/or federal authority of food processing and storage facilities and on the farm inspections at produce growers.  Conducts joint inspections with staff in the Food Processing team, and inspections to promote compliance with the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Hazard Analysis, and Risk-based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation (PCHF Rule).  Evaluates the food safety management system and conformance with KAR 4-28-2 regulations, including 21 CFR 100-186.  Thoroughly documents observations using the electronic inspection program or, if technical issues arise, the paper inspection forms. Effectively uses photographs and videos to document inspection observations.  Timely and accurately submits documentation of violative conditions per program procedures.  Provides food protection education/training and compliance assistance during inspections.  Tailors education and compliance assistance activities to behaviors, processes and procedures that do not meet the requirements of 21 CFR 100-186.

• Under the FDA contract, this position conducts FDA contract inspections per FDA guidelines, under FDA credentials, including Limited Scope Preventive Control (PC), Full Scope PC, Official Establishment Inventory (OEI) Data Collection Form, FDA Contract Out of Business (OOB) and/or Visits, and conducts environmental sampling events under either FDA contract or Food Safety and Lodging Program.

• This position Investigates suspected foodborne illnesses associated at facilities to determine causes and prevent further illnesses by using the ability and knowledge to collect and interpret necessary data.  Collects and prepares samples of water and foods to determine quality and safety of continued use by submitting samples to the laboratory for analysis. Investigates natural disasters and transportation accidents affecting regulated facilities, food products or drugs to determine the degree of product adulteration and sanitary conditions of facilities through the use of emergency on-site surveys.  Conducts recall confirmations initiated by state or federal agencies of food and drug products at retail, wholesale, and points of manufacture in order to prevent further distribution of hazardous foods by invoking embargoes, seizures, or voluntary product destruction.

• This position communicates and cooperates with all stakeholders, maintaining good customer service for internal and external customers. Performs other related duties, as assigned by the District Manager or Program Management.

This position will be assigned a territory region based on the location of the chosen applicant. The applicant must live in Kansas or be willing to relocate.

This position is a home-based position. The applicant that is selected for this position will start each workday from his/her home unless traveling for work. Extensive travel, including overnight stays, is required to cover the assigned territory. Lodging and per diem expenses are provided when overnight stays are required.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in a biological, agriculture, physical science or food science. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
Knowledge of food safety Laws/Regulations, food preparation, food processing procedures, formulations.
Technical skills and knowledge to perform inspections under the Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Hazard Analysis, and Risk-based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation (PCHF Rule).
Excellent public speaking, written and verbal communication.
At least one year of experience in planning, implementing, and monitoring activities relevant to the agency’s programs. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Requirements:

Must be able to obtain FDA Credentials.Maintain FDA Credentials which includes ongoing education and out of state travel for coursework.
Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicle and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
Must be able to:differentiate between colors on sanitizer test strips.
lift and/or carry 60 pounds of equipment.
stand or walk for long periods of time.
withstand various temperature fluctuations and environmental/weather related conditions.
bend or stoop on a regular basis.
drive a vehicle for long periods of time which may result in overnight travel.

Compensation:

Annual Salary Range: $42,575 – $43,575
Hourly Pay Range: $20.47 – $20.95
